Halibut Fishing is Hot

With summer winding down, the evenings and mornings are cooler, but the fishing is still hot. The streams are full of salmon and the bears are everywhere busy putting on pounds for the winter.

There are silvers in the bay by the thousands so the king fishing may have slowed down, but there is no shortage of fish on the line. The acrobatic cohos are living up to their reputation as one our favorite fish to have on the other end of a bending rod. Hearing "FISH ON!" with multiple hook-ups at the same time is always exciting and a real work-out for the captain and his first mate. We rose to the challenge many times.

The halibut have moved into shallow water to feed on dying pinks. This makes them fun to catch. The water was so clear after 4 days of calm in the ocean ,we were trolling and watching halibut come up off the bottom (50-60 feet) and take the bait . You could see them hit the bait and shake their head. Everyone was watching and shouting "He's got it" but they forgot to grab the rods! It was more fun for the clients to watch them do this then reel them in.

There are lots of eagles also this year, due to a larger pink run I suppose

King Salmon and Halibut Fishing

The king salmon and halibut fishing at Kodiak Adventures Lodge is great! Our guests have had great luck bringing in the fish. One client released 7 kings and 8 halibut in a 6 hour period!! Talk about great fishing! He had a phenomonal time with us and was able to see every animal Kodiak Island has to offer. There were whales breaching in front of the lodge, eagles flying overhead and seals playing at the end of the spit. It has been an amazing summer and we look forward to more great fishing as the season progresses.

Kayakers at Kodiak Adventures Lodge

Since bringing out the two tandem kayaks to Kodiak Adventures Lodge, they have been a welcome way to tour around the bay and see some wildlife. On one such trip out, a curious seal came within 20 feet of the kayak. On another a few white wing scotters were out as well, they were less afraid than the seal and swam to within 20 feet of the kayak. The calm waters of the morning is a great time to get out and enjoy the beauty and wildlife that is part of the lure to Kodiak Island.

Kodiak Adventures Lodge Now Has Ocean Going Kayaks

New for the 2009 season, Kodiak Adventures Lodge has purchased two ocean going kayaks. The kayaks can be used by our clients to view the beautiful scenery and abundant wildlife that makes Kodiak Island so unique. They offer a quieter mode of travel around the bay to enhance the experience of staying at a remote Alaskan wilderness lodge.

We are really excited to be able to have the kayaks available to our clients. The kayaks have a small seat in them so parents will be able to take a young child in the kayak with them as they paddle around the bay.

Stay posted for more news from Kodiak Adventures Lodge, Happy Fishing!!

Our new addition to the lodge is a 28' Landing Craft. It is a perfect fit for the lodge and especially for our drop off deer hunts. It is much easier to get people to shore so they can do everything from beach combing to bear viewing or hunting in the fall. Book a trip of a lifetime and check it out!
